Slow Burn
What does slow burn mean?
Slow burn is a romance pacing style in which attraction between the leads builds gradually over much of the story before they finally get together. The first kiss might land at the seventy-percent mark, or at the end of book two. What fills the space is tension: almost-touches, interrupted confessions, jealousy neither lead will name, and a reader who knows before either character does.
The craft rule is that slow must never mean static. Every chapter has to move the relationship a visible notch — a new vulnerability, a changed habit, a line crossed and then retreated from — while a believable obstacle keeps the leads apart. Readers forgive a long wait when each step is earned and the payoff is proportionate to the delay; they abandon a book where the delay is just a missing plot.
