Cozy Fantasy

Cozy fantasy is fantasy with the stakes turned down and the warmth turned up. Instead of saving the world, characters run tea shops for orcs, restore haunted bookstores, or retire from adventuring to grow magical vegetables. The conflict is gentle — a failing business, a misunderstanding between neighbors, a garden that won't bloom — and the resolution almost always involves community, food, and kindness.

The label is commonly used for fantasy that treats belonging, work, food, friendship, and recovery as meaningful story stakes. If your comfort reads involve found family, low peril, and lovingly described everyday rituals, you are already close to the category.

Write your own cozy fantasy story

Steal a premise and make it yours — here are a few from our fantasy prompt library:

  • Every citizen receives one spell at birth, chosen by lottery. Yours has been declared illegal — retroactively, as of this morning.
  • The dragon your village sacrifices to hasn't eaten anyone in two hundred years. You're this year's offering, and you find out why.
  • Magic is dying, and the last enchanted objects are kept in a museum. You're the night guard, and tonight one of them spoke your name.
