Found Family

What does found family mean?

Found family is a story trope in which characters who are not related by blood choose each other and become a family through loyalty, shared hardship, and care. A mercenary crew, a misfit adventuring party, the orphans a reluctant mentor keeps feeding: in fantasy especially, the quest is often the excuse and the family it creates is the real payoff.

The craft rule is that the bond must be tested and chosen. Proximity makes a group; sacrifice, forgiveness, and staying when leaving would be easier make a family. The strongest found-family stories give each member a wound the others can see, a moment where one of them could walk away, and a scene where the group shows up for someone who never expected to be claimed.
