Grumpy x sunshine pairs a closed-off, irritable lead with a relentlessly warm one and lets the temperature difference do the work. The grump isn't cruel — they're guarded, precise, allergic to small talk; the sunshine isn't naive — they're deliberate about joy, often in defiance of their own history. The trope's payoff is asymmetry: the sunshine is warm to everyone, but the grump softens for exactly one person, and everyone notices.
The craft rule is that both leads must be competent and both must change.
