Make the name work inside the story

A memorable name is not always an unusual one. It gives the reader a clean sound, fits the world, and stays distinct from the rest of the cast. Put your shortlist beside the names of the protagonist's closest allies and rivals before you decide.

Genre is a useful starting signal, not a rule. A simple name can make a fantasy world feel grounded; a stranger name can make an ordinary setting feel unsettled. Keep the contrast that supports the character you are writing.

A quick four-part name check

  1. 1. Sound: Can a reader pronounce it after seeing it once?
  2. 2. Contrast: Does it sound different from every other important name?
  3. 3. Setting: Does it support the place, period, or culture you established?
  4. 4. Search: Is the full name already strongly associated with someone or something else?

Character name questions

Is the character name generator free?

Yes. You can generate and copy as many names as you want without creating an account or entering an email address.

Does this generator use AI?

No. It combines curated first-name and surname banks for each genre, so results are instant and do not send your story idea to a model. AIBookCraft uses AI later when you choose to develop the character or draft a chapter in the app.

How do I choose a good character name?

Read the full cast aloud. Important characters should sound distinct, fit the setting, and be easy to remember. Avoid giving several characters the same initial unless that similarity is intentional.

Can two fictional characters have the same name?

Yes, and generated combinations may already exist in books or real life. Before publishing, search the full name and check that it will not be confused with a famous character, public figure, or protected brand.
