Enemies to lovers is the romance trope where the two leads start in genuine opposition — rivals, opposing lawyers, warring houses — and fall for each other against their own better judgment. It works because conflict is chemistry: every argument is attention, every truce is intimacy, and the moment the wall cracks hits harder because the wall was real.
The trope's central craft rule is that the opposition must be earned and the turn must be gradual. Readers track the micro-moments — the first reluctant favor, the first defense of the enemy to a third party, the first 'we.' Give the rivalry real stakes and the relationship a real cost.
