Chapters

  1. 1Chapter 1: The First SignsAlex begins to notice physical and emotional changes associated with puberty and shares experiences with friends Sam and Maria. The chapter introduces Dr. Evelyn Reed as a trusted source of information, and highlights the importance of kindness, self-acceptance, and seeking support. It ends by encouraging readers to embrace the journey ahead.
  2. 2Chapter 2: Quiet Questions, Honest AnswersAlex opens up to Dr. Reed about their worries of developing too quickly or slowly, prompting a gentle discussion about puberty's timing and normalcy. Maria reveals her internal struggle with expectations versus her true feelings, seeking comfort from her friends. The chapter uses warmth, reassurance, and small acts of kindness among the trio to normalize uncertainty, ending with Alex and friends feeling less alone in their experiences.
  3. 3Under the Shelter of FriendshipMaria opens up more to Alex about her internal struggles during lunch, deepening their bond. Alex listens with empathy, reassuring Maria that it’s okay to feel out of step with expectations. They share small kindnesses—Maria sketches a portrait of Alex, and Alex writes a supportive note for Maria. Dr. Reed quietly observes their growing trust, later guiding Sam in navigating his desire to fit in. The chapter ends with the trio walking home together, feeling closer and more accepted.
  4. 4Small Steps Toward Self-DiscoveryAlex, Maria, and Sam unintentionally organize an impromptu after-school art-sharing afternoon in Alex’s kitchen. Each friend quietly reveals something new—Maria shows a bold, unfinished self-portrait; Sam tries his hand at making tea for everyone and admits his worries about not measuring up; Alex reads a short poem about change. Dr. Reed stops by with apples and gentle encouragement, reminding them that small acts of self-expression build confidence. The friends leave feeling a little braver and more connected, aware that discovery happens in small, everyday ways.
  5. 5Looking Inward, Reaching OutAlex faces an awkward moment at school when classmates begin to gossip about body changes and differences. Maria and Sam experience their own discomfort as rumors swirl. Dr. Reed offers support and reassurance, leading Alex and friends to open up about their individual insecurities. The friends learn that sharing worries and supporting each other makes challenges feel lighter. The chapter gently raises the emotional stakes but resolves tension through warmth and understanding.
  6. 6Revealing What’s UnderneathAlex, Sam, and Maria spend a gentle afternoon together at Alex’s house, where the steady rain outside sets a cozy mood. As they share tea and snacks, Maria quietly reveals her secret: she often feels disconnected from how she’s expected to behave and wishes she could express her true self more openly. This moment brings the friends closer, allowing Sam to admit his own pressures, and Alex to share their worries about changing too fast or too slow. Dr. Reed visits, offering reassurance and framing the act of sharing secrets as a sign of strength, not weakness. The chapter deepens the friends’ bond and encourages openness.
  7. 7Unfolding ColorsAlex and Maria share a quiet walk home after the rainy afternoon, deepening their friendship as Maria tries to show more of her true self. Through gentle conversation and small acts of understanding, Alex encourages Maria’s self-expression, and both discover comfort in being accepted as they are. The chapter closes with them planning a small creative project together, marking another step toward self-acceptance.
  8. 8New Patterns, Gentle BondsAlex and Maria quietly deepen their friendship the next day at school by supporting each other's small acts of self-expression. They share wild socks as promised, noticing quiet encouragement from classmates and Sam. Dr. Reed observes their subtle courage and later offers Alex a moment of warmth and reassurance in the hallway, affirming the value of gentle progress. The chapter ends with Alex and Maria planning their comic together, feeling the strength of their growing trust.
  9. 9Chapter 9: The UnveilingAlex and Maria prepare to share their comic draft with their classmates for the first time, feeling a mix of anticipation and anxiety. As they navigate quiet doubts and Sam’s sudden nerves, Dr. Reed offers gentle reassurance. During art class, Alex hesitates but ultimately finds the courage to present their comic, supported by Maria and Sam. The class's reaction is quietly positive, and Alex realizes that sharing their true self, though scary, can strengthen friendships and self-confidence.
  10. 10Chapter 10: Changing on the Inside and OutAlex, Maria, and Sam reflect on the meaning of their comic and how it connects to the changes in their bodies and feelings during puberty. Dr. Reed joins them at lunch and gently leads a conversation about how everyone develops at their own pace. The friends share quiet worries and new realizations, and Dr. Reed reassures them that their experiences are unique but normal. The chapter closes with the friends feeling more comfortable in their skin, aware that change is ongoing but companionship and kindness make the journey lighter.

  • The Porcelain Throne's Portal

Some forty years ago, I had the opportunity to have as many friends over as I'd like while my parents were at work. I was told that the house was now mine. My siblings, nine years older than me, were all gone. A 3-1/2-bedroom home with two bathrooms and a decked-out basement with a barn that I called Pete's Pub. Pete's Pub also had a large freezer that I easily put quarter barrels in if needed, depending upon the amount of people that came over. It was like running a speakeasy, except there was no famous knock and there was no one not accepted. Everybody could come in as long as you were either a jock, a freak, or just a walking nomad. As long as you had a buck to suck, you were in this party, but this party wasn't for pussies either. It had shots. We were going to do whisky. We were going to do tequila. We even did a day of vodka. It's morning, for God's sake! Make mamasas. Though my friends and I were not into pussy drinks, we went for the gusto, probably whisky and water for the most. Back then, wines were still big: country quencher, Boon's Farm, strawberry hill, things like that. It was amazing at 14% alcohol, and drinking like it's a beer, you get very trashed. You start talking about shit that isn't there. You start to do shit that's not there. You march up big hills by yourself and sit down and what the hell is going on? It's a good time. Have the normies check on you once in a while, just in case you forgot to put your cataract on or you're laying in frozen or whatever your issue may be. Take care. God bless! One of my neighbors is out for me, saying I wasn't home to fight with her. I guess the word that came down is these are the same people, mind you, that flooded our apartment there in 303 or in 203. Our apartment happens to be on the first floor. You go in the basement for 101 and 102. That's either here or there at the moment, because here we are. This is where I got to. I'm pretty much a washed-up wrestler. I got my ass kicked by the guy who ran the meeting prior to this, Mike Canodo. I'm sure he's going to teach another rough crowd to do more of that, because that's what he's about, and that's what I respect about him. He keeps doing the next right thing, allowing himself to make mistakes. You
