Alex and Maria stepped out together, hoods up, damp shoes making quiet splashes as they walked the slow way toward Maria’s house. The air smelled fresh—wet pavement, distant woodsmoke, and the last sweetness of banana bread from Alex’s pocket, saved for later.

They didn’t rush. Side by side, they watched their warm breath cloud in the growing dusk. Maria’s hands fidgeted inside her sleeves. The silence between them was gentle, and Alex waited, knowing sometimes words needed time.

Maria broke it first, her voice small but certain. "Do you ever wish you could just…not care what people think? Like, show up in something wild, or say something funny, without everyone looking at you weird?"
