Rain pattered against the windows as lunchtime settled over the school. Alex squeezed into a spot beside Maria and Sam, the comic folder tucked warmly between their knees. The cafeteria buzzed—trays clattering, someone’s laughter tumbling from the next table. But at their little corner, the world seemed softer. Sam peeled an orange, its bright scent curling into the air, while Maria unwrapped a sandwich she’d folded neatly in a napkin.
Alex nudged the comic, glancing at both friends. "Do you think showing it really helped anyone?"
Sam lobbed a piece of orange peel into his palm, frowning in thought. “Maybe. I saw Jamie looking at their socks after class. Like, maybe they’ll try wild ones tomorrow.”
