Chapter 12
Seeds of Trust
Alex, Maria, and Sam gather for a gentle evening in Alex's kitchen, responding to Dr. Reed’s invitation to share questions about puberty. As they sip tea and reflect, Alex quietly shares their worry about changing at a different pace from others, revealing their secret fear of feeling behind or ahead. Maria responds with empathy, opening up further about her struggles with self-expression. Sam admits he sometimes pretends to understand more than he does, sharing his own uncertainty. Dr. Reed offers gentle reassurance, affirming that everyone’s journey through puberty is unique. The chapter ends with the friends feeling closer, the air filled with warmth and trust, and a deepened sense of connection to themselves and each other.
The evening brought a soft hush to Alex’s kitchen, sunlight slipping out behind gentle clouds. Maria sat curled at the end of the table, sketchbook open beside the empty muffins. Sam leaned back, letting his socked feet swing above the floor, while Alex cradled their mug, watching steam rise in twisting ribbons. Dr. Reed lingered quietly by the windowsill, the stack of notecards now tucked safely in her bag.
Alex felt a warmth in their chest, mingling with a flutter of nerves. With the comfort of new questions and old friends, they sensed it was time for something honest. They glanced at Maria, then Sam, then spoke softly, “I’ve always worried that I’m not changing at the right pace. Sometimes it feels like everyone else is ahead… or maybe behind. I get anxious, wondering if something’s wrong with me.”
Sam looked up, surprise flickering in his eyes. “You too?” He shrugged, reaching for a slice of apple. “I always try to act like I know what’s going on, but half the time I don’t. I feel pressure to pretend I’m super grown up, especially around my friends. But it’s confusing. I wish it felt okay to admit I’m still learning.”
