The air in the makeshift prison was thick with the scent of damp earth and despair. Ophelia huddled against the rough-hewn stone wall, the chill seeping into her bones, a familiar companion. Beside her, Rohesia, her loyal friend, trembled, her usual vibrant spirit dimmed by fear. They were prisoners, captives of Prince Reed, a man whose name had become synonymous with the encroaching darkness that had consumed Vadronia.

Reed, a gaunt figure with eyes that glittered like shards of ice, prowled before them, his laughter a grating sound that echoed in the confined space. Ophelia’s heart ached with a familiar pang of doubt. Reed’s words, though laced with malice, tapped into the deep-seated insecurities that had long plagued her. Ashvin’s distance, his awkward silences, his reluctance to meet her gaze – it all painted a picture of a man who found her a burden, an obligation he wished he could shed. The memory of his curt agreement to their marriage, the vague justification about the war, all whispered the same disheartening truth.
