Ch. 1: THE WARNING
In mist-shrouded Hlaneki Village near Xindewula Mountain, young Chavani Rixile ignores his grandmother’s dire warnings about the forbidden forest at the mountain’s base – home to two ancient, deadly creatures called the Lord of Birds and the Guardian of Shadows that have killed trespassers for millennia – and prepares to explore it with his friends Ntila and Sungu. Ntila, adopted by Mrs Shongotelo after his parents vanished in the forest years ago, is determined to uncover the truth about their fate, while Sungu seeks to prove the legends false. Though Rixile’s grandmother gives him a glowing protective stone and reveals that only a hidden crystal from Babangu Village can destroy the beasts, he presses on with his friends into the forest, where the air grows heavy and strange; as they venture deeper, the stone begins to glow, and the terrifying creatures emerge from the shadows, confirming the legends are real.
