INTO THE FOREST DEPTHS
The moment they crossed beneath the first canopy of trees, the forest came alive around them – but not with the sounds of birds or animals. Instead, they heard whispers carried on the wind, voices speaking in the old language that made the hair on their necks stand up. The trees themselves seemed to move, their branches twisting and reaching toward them as if trying to block their path.
But Rixile held up the guide stone, and its bright light pushed back the moving branches and silenced the whispers. The crystal in its pouch glowed warm against his chest, and he could feel its power flowing through him, giving him strength and clarity of purpose.
“We need to go to the heart of the forest,” Ntila said, his voice steady despite the strange energy that surrounded them. “That’s where the beasts make their home – where my parents were lost, where Mrs Shongotelo and Rixile’s grandmother faced them all those years ago.”
