Chapter 9

Echoes in the Dust

The pain of Alvin's loss is a constant companion. A part of me died with him that day. The memories, though painful, are all I have left. His absence is a void that can never be filled, a silence that echoes through the years.

The dust still settled, not just on the streets we once ruled, but in the quiet corners of my mind, a constant, gritty reminder. Sleep offered little respite, a battlefield where memories, sharp and unforgiving, ambushed my weary soul. Alvin. My little brother. The name itself was a raw wound, a phantom limb that ached with an emptiness no amount of time could ever fill. We were kings, or so we believed. Alvin and Lashawn, a force of nature, a tempest that swept through the city, leaving no doubt as to who held the crown. They were number one, untouchable, invincible. We were always prepared, always a step ahead, a carefully constructed illusion that made us feel like gods walking among mortals. The gang task forces, they wanted us, their eyes burning with a hunger that mirrored the streets’ own desperate yearning for dominance. And we, we danced on the edge of their grasp, always just out of reach, always anticipating the next move, the next threat. We thought we were so clever, so damn prepared for anything. We were wrong.

The enemy, when they finally struck, didn't come from the shadows we knew. They didn’t emerge from rival blocks or the calculated sting of undercover operations. No, they came from somewhere else, somewhere alien, like a rip in the fabric of reality, a blow delivered not just to us, but to the very air we breathed. It was a devastating blow, one that shattered our carefully constructed world, leaving behind only the jagged fragments of what once was. It was a shock so profound, so utterly unexpected, that it stole the air from our lungs and the fight from our souls. We were always ready, always ten steps ahead, or so we told ourselves. The truth, however, was a bitter pill to swallow. We were blindsided, caught in a snare woven from threads we hadn’t even seen.

The last time I spoke to Alvin, it feels like a lifetime ago, and in many ways, it was. Twenty-six years. A quarter of a century. The words are etched into my memory, each syllable a painful reminder of what I lost, of what was taken. It wasn't just a conversation; it was the severing of a cord, a tearing away of a vital piece of myself. I haven't been the same since. How could I be? Alvin was more than just my brother. He was my shadow, my guard, my fiercest protector. If anyone dared to cross me, to even cast a suspicious glance in my direction, they had to contend with Alvin. He was a wall, an unbreachable fortress that stood between me and any harm. His loyalty was a burning ember, a constant heat that warmed my back and fortified my resolve. He was the toughest, the bravest, the one who always had my six. And in the end, that fierce protectiveness, that unwavering shield, couldn't save him.
