A Debt to Society

The silence in the early morning hours used to be a sanctuary, a soft blanket pulled over the world, allowing my racing thoughts a brief respite. Now, it’s a taunting void, amplifying the echoes of a past I can’t outrun. Sleep, or the lack of it, has become my constant companion, a grim reminder of the day the invincible shattered. I still see it sometimes, that moment when the world tilted, when the ground beneath our feet turned to quicksand. Alvin and LaShawn, their faces alight with the fierce joy of victory, basking in the glow of being number one. Untouchable. Invincible. We were a force, a storm that swept through the streets, daring anyone to stand in our way. The gang task forces wanted us, the streets wanted us, and we met every challenge head-on, always a step ahead, or so we believed. We were prepared for anything, for anyone. Or so we thought.

The enemy, when they came, didn’t announce themselves. They didn’t send a warning. They materialized from the shadows, from the impossible, like a phantom limb aching with a pain that was all too real. It was a blow so devastating, so unexpected, it left us reeling, breathless. We thought we knew the game, the players, the rules. We were wrong. So profoundly, terrifyingly wrong.

I close my eyes, and I can still hear Alvin’s laugh, a rough, joyous sound that promised adventure and protection in equal measure. He was my shadow, my fierce guardian, the one who stood between me and any perceived threat. If someone had a problem with me, they had a problem with Alvin, and that problem was usually solved before it even had a chance to fully form. He was the embodiment of loyalty, a wall of granite against the world. And now, that wall was gone.
