Story-sized premise

Define only the part of the world that creates decisions in this story.

Rules, power, and cost

A memorable rule becomes useful when breaking or obeying it costs someone.

People and ordinary life

Show the setting through work, status, ritual, and disagreement rather than exposition.

Conflict, place, and scene use

Turn worldbuilding into locations, sensory constraints, and a problem for the protagonist.

Build outward from consequence

A setting detail earns its place when it changes who has power, what a choice costs, or how a scene feels. Start with the unusual rule and price. Then show how people work, trade, disagree, and improvise around that constraint.

Worldbuilding questions

What should a worldbuilding template include?

For story use, define the unusual rule, its price, who controls it, how ordinary people live with it, the conflict already in motion, and why that world makes the protagonist’s goal harder.

How much worldbuilding do I need before writing?

Enough to make the next scene specific. A working rule, a cost, two groups with incompatible interests, and one sensory location are often more useful than a complete encyclopedia.

Where is my worldbuilding saved?

Entries are saved in browser storage on the current device. No field text is sent to a server or analytics, and the Clear control removes the browser-local draft.

Can I export the worldbuilding template?

Yes. Copy the whole worksheet as Markdown or download a .md file for a notes app, repository, or writing project.
