Chapter 17
The Final Stand
With her mother safe and her friends by her side, Elara faces the wizard. She channels her inner strength, not magic, into a powerful defiance.
The air in the wizard's desolate chamber crackled, not with the familiar hum of potent magic, but with a chilling, malevolent silence. Elara stood, her heart a frantic drum against her ribs, her hands empty where vibrant energy had once flowed. Beside her, Finn’s brow was furrowed in concentration, a protective shield shimmering faintly around them, while Leo’s stance was wide, his fists clenched, a silent promise of elemental force held in check. The Evil Wizard, a silhouette against the pulsing darkness of his lair, sneered, his eyes like chips of obsidian reflecting the fear he so readily sowed.
“So, the little spark thinks she can still burn without her flame?” the wizard rasped, his voice like grinding stones. He gestured languidly towards a shimmering, translucent cage that held Elara’s mother, her face pale but her gaze steady, fixed on her daughter. “Your mother’s fear is a delicious seasoning, child. And your own helplessness… a fine dessert.”
Elara’s jaw tightened, a wave of fury washing over her, sharp and hot, but it was a different kind of heat now, one that originated deep within her, not from the tips of her fingers. She remembered the suffocating darkness of the empty well where her magic had been, the hollow ache that had followed. But she also remembered the desperate courage that had propelled her through the prison’s labyrinth, the unwavering hope that had guided her to her mother. And she remembered the faces of the villagers, their eyes wide with terror, now freed thanks to Finn and Leo’s quick thinking and her mother’s quiet strength.
