Whispers of Doubt
The wizard attempts to break Elara's spirit by showing her visions of failure and her mother's suffering. Her inner strength is tested.
The air in the hidden chamber crackled, not with the usual hum of ambient magic, but with a cold, malevolent energy that seemed to leech the warmth from Elara’s very bones. Before her, the ancient wizard, a figure cloaked in shadows that writhed like dark tendrils, gestured with a gnarled hand. He hadn’t touched her, not physically, but the sensation was far worse – a violation of her very essence.
"You think you are strong, little one?" the wizard’s voice rasped, like dry leaves skittering across stone. "You rely on a gift you barely understand. What are you without it?"
Elara tried to summon a shield, a simple ward she’d conjured a thousand times. Nothing. Her fingertips tingled, but not with power; with a hollow emptiness that echoed the void where her magic had been. Panic, cold and sharp, pricked at the edges of her resolve. She glanced at Finn and Leo, their faces etched with worry, their own magical reserves straining against the wizard’s oppressive aura. They were trying to hold him back, to give her time, but the grim set of their jaws told her they felt the drain, too.
