The cart wheels groaned a protest against the rutted track, each lurch a reminder of how far Elias and his companions had traveled from the suffocating stone walls of the Mage Guild. Sunlight, warm and unfiltered, painted the rolling hills in hues of emerald and gold, a stark contrast to the perpetual twilight of his former life. Beside him, Lyra hummed a tuneless melody, her hand resting on the hilt of her well-worn sword, her gaze sweeping the horizon with practiced vigilance. Flicker, a shimmering speck of light, flitted around Elias’s head, occasionally dipping to tickle his ear with an unseen wing, while Grumble, a stout, moss-covered figure, occupied the back of the cart, a silent, immovable mountain of reassuring presence.

Their destination was a village Elias had only heard mentioned in hushed whispers among the guild’s less reputable informants – Oakhaven. It was the sort of puzzle that Elias, with his newly awakened "eyes of God," felt compelled to investigate.

As they crested a final rise, Oakhaven spread before them, nestled in a shallow valley like a forgotten jewel. It was a picturesque scene – thatched roofs, a gently meandering stream, fields ripe for harvest. Yet, an unsettling stillness hung in the air, a palpable absence of the usual bustle of village life. No children’s laughter, no blacksmith’s hammer, no farmers calling to one another. Even the birds seemed to sing with a muted sorrow.
