The chill of the pre-dawn air did little to stir Elias from his contemplation. The familiar worn leather of his staff felt solid and comforting in his grip, a stark contrast to the swirling, boundless possibilities that now unfurled before him. He’d left the Mage Guild, not with a bang, but with a quiet, resolute step, the echoing silence of his departure far louder than any accusation. Lyra, ever vigilant, stood beside him, her hand resting lightly on the hilt of her sword, her gaze sweeping the shadowy tree line as if expecting the very walls of the guild to sprout legs and pursue them. Flicker, a tiny mote of iridescent light, zipped around Elias’s head, its usual cheerful chirps muted by the gravity of their decision. And then there was Grumble.

He sat, a solid, moss-covered boulder of a creature, at the edge of the small clearing where they’d made their camp. His form was a testament to raw, unyielding earth, rough-hewn and ancient. His eyes, deep-set within his stony face, held a quiet wisdom that Elias found himself increasingly drawn to. Grumble had been an unexpected addition, a silent guardian Elias had discovered slumbering in a forgotten grove, drawn there by a flicker of his nascent ‘eyes of God’ magic. When Elias had first approached, the earth elemental had merely grumbled, a low rumble that vibrated through the soles of Elias’s boots. But there had been no malice, only a deep, abiding weariness, a sense of being overlooked.

“Are you sure about this, Elias?” Lyra’s voice was low, a steady anchor in the rising tide of uncertainty. “Leaving… everything?”
