Chapter 6
The Tremor from Above
The theater groans again, a deeper, more resonant sound that shakes the very foundations of the building. It’s not the grinding of machinery, but the awakening of something colossal. Evan’s eyes are drawn upward, to the jagged rents in the ceiling where the night sky should be. A seismic tremor rattles the decaying structure, and a sound begins to echo from the darkness beyond the fractured roof – a slow, deliberate clap. One. Then another. Each clap is louder, more resonant, imbued with an authority that dwarfs the Jester's panicked pronouncements.
The metallic groan had been a prelude, a wheezing sigh from a dying beast. This new sound, however, was the rumble of creation, or perhaps, its undoing. It began as a low thrum beneath Evan’s feet, a vibration that resonated not just through the splintered floorboards and twisted metal of the ruined theater, but through the very marrow of his bones. They pulsed now, not with the frantic urgency of a newly discovered language, but with the quiet confidence of understanding. He was reading, yes, but more than that, he was *interpreting*. He was translating the raw, chaotic data of this collapsing reality into something coherent, something he could then, in turn, rewrite.
The Jester, still on its knee, head bowed as if in prayer, let out a wheezing gasp. "No," it rasped, the sound like grinding gears. "It… it hears."
