The Jester's Terror
The Jester stumbles backward, its programmed composure shattering. Its painted smile, once a fixed parody of mirth, now contorts into a grimace of pure terror. "No! You cannot!" it shrieks, its mechanical voice cracking further. "You are not supposed to..." Evan meets its panicked gaze, the black diamond script burning with newfound clarity on his arm. He feels the power surging through him, the ability to rewrite the very fabric of this distorted reality. The Jester's fear is palpable, a primal terror that transcends its mechanical nature, hinting at the immense forces it serves.
The applause stopped. Not gradually. All at once. Silence collapsed over the ruined theater like a heavy curtain. Splintered seats, bleeding floorboards, and twisted spotlights stood motionless, frozen in the aftermath of a performance that had forgotten how to end. Evan couldn't hear his own breathing. Mara's trembling hand clutched his sleeve. The Jester remained at center stage. Its porcelain grin flickered. Not with emotion. With error.
“...Act...” it whispered. Its voice skipped. “...Three...”
The theater answered with a deep metallic groan that rolled beneath the floor like a gigantic machine grinding against itself. Curtains unraveled into long ribbons of darkness. The audience no longer moved as one. Some clawed at their masks. Others stared upward, confused, as if hearing a command that contradicted another. Evan felt the black diamond patterns burning beneath his skin. Not consuming him. Calling him. For the first time, he understood what they were. Not an infection. A language. Thousands of tiny geometric symbols unfolded across his arm, each carrying a meaning older than words. As he looked at them, the stage shifted in response. A broken spotlight repaired itself. A chair disappeared. One audience member simply... ceased to exist, erased like an actor cut from a script.
