The air in Arsi tasted different, tinged with the dust of ages and the faint, sweet scent of the land itself. Fikadu felt it settle on his skin, a familiar yet foreign embrace, as he walked the winding paths that led to the elders. His father’s fragmented tales had brought him here, to the heart of a region that held the echoes of his mother’s past, a past he was slowly, painstakingly, beginning to understand. Each step was a deliberate move away from the comfortable ambiguity of his childhood and towards a truth that felt both vital and fragile.
He found them gathered under the sprawling branches of an ancient acacia tree, their faces etched with the stories of a lifetime. They were the keepers of memory, the living libraries of Alikesa and the surrounding villages. Their eyes, sharp and knowing, welcomed him, recognizing the purpose in his stride, the question in his bearing. He introduced himself, his voice a little unsteady, mentioning his mother, Bizunesh Megersa, and his father, Adugna Feyisa. The names hung in the air, a gentle ripple of recognition spreading through the gathered group.
An elder, his beard a cascade of white, his hands gnarled like the roots of the very tree they sat under, beckoned him closer. “Bizunesh,” he murmured, his voice a low rumble, like distant thunder. “A strong spirit. A brave heart.”
