The dust of Alikesa settled around Fikadu like a familiar cloak, but it no longer offered comfort. It was a cloak woven with unanswered questions, with the lingering scent of his mother’s hidden life, and with the heavy silence of his father’s unspoken words. The journals, painstakingly transcribed, were a lifeline, yet they were also a map to a territory he couldn't fully grasp. He held them now, their pages thin and worn, a testament to Bizunesh’s quiet intensity. The fragmented accounts of clandestine meetings, of hushed whispers carrying the weight of revolution, of the ever-present threat that clung to their community like the dry season’s heat, painted a picture of a woman he knew, yet didn't truly know.

His father, Adugna Feyisa, watched him with eyes that held the wisdom of years and the burden of memory. Each shared meal, each walk through the fields, was imbued with a subtle tension. Adugna would offer a story, a seemingly innocuous anecdote about a past harvest or a local dispute, but Fikadu, armed with Bizunesh’s words, now heard the subtext, the subtle omissions, the careful redirection. It was like trying to read a book with half the pages torn out, the plot hinted at but never fully revealed.

“The Arsi zone,” Fikadu said, the words tasting foreign on his tongue, yet feeling undeniably right. “I need to go there, Aba.”
