The roar had faded, replaced by the heavy thud of paws on the dry earth, each sound a drumbeat of approaching doom. Noeh, heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird, stumbled deeper into the thorny embrace of the undergrowth. He risked a glance back, a desperate, fleeting look, and saw it. The lion, a magnificent, terrible silhouette against the fading sun, had stopped. It stood not ten paces away, its tawny coat shimmering, its muscles coiled like springs.

But it hadn't pounced. It hadn't lunged. Instead, it had paused, its massive head tilted slightly, its golden eyes locked onto Noeh. It was a gaze that seemed to bore through the branches, through the fear that coiled in Noeh’s stomach, and into the very core of his being. It wasn't the frenzied hunger of a predator about to strike; it was something else, something more profound, more ancient.

Noeh froze, his breath catching in his throat. He could feel the lion’s stare, a palpable weight pressing down on him. Every instinct screamed at him to run, to scramble away, to disappear. But his legs, stiff with terror, refused to obey. He was caught, not just by the lion's proximity, but by the unnerving stillness of the moment.
