The sun, a molten eye in the vast azure, beat down upon Elara’s weary form. Each grain of sand seemed to mock her, a testament to the endless, unforgiving expanse. Her throat was parched, her lips cracked, and the tattered remnants of her wings felt heavy as lead. She had walked for days, or perhaps weeks; time had become a fluid, unreliable thing in this desolate realm. The prophecy, a faint whisper in the wind, had been her only guide, a promise of an oasis that might cleanse her soul or swallow it whole.

She looked up, her eyes, still holding a spark of their former celestial light, scanning the horizon.

Emerging from a swirling vortex of sand and heat haze was a creature of unimaginable scale. A serpent, its body a tapestry of ancient, sun-baked scales the color of dried blood and ochre, its head as large as a boulder. Its eyes, twin pools of molten gold, fixed upon her. There was an intelligence in that gaze, an age that dwarfed even the stars she once knew. This was no mere beast of the desert; this was something far older, far more profound.
