The sun beat down with a relentless fury, a molten eye in a bleached sky. Each grain of sand seemed to radiate heat, and the air shimmered, distorting the already vast emptiness around Elara. Her throat felt like sandpaper, a desperate, rasping plea for moisture that the desert seemed determined to deny. Days had bled into one another, marked only by the agonizing crawl of the sun and the chilling descent of the star-pricked night. Her tattered wings, usually a source of comfort, now felt like heavy, useless burdens, catching the hot wind and offering no relief.

She stumbled, her knees buckling. The stone altar, her starting point, was long gone, swallowed by the endless undulation of the dunes. Now, there was only sand, stretching in every direction, an ocean of gold and burning silence. The prophecy, the whispered promise of an oasis, felt like a cruel joke, a taunt from a sky that had long since turned its back on her. Hope, a fragile bloom in her desolate heart, was beginning to wither under this unyielding oppression.

Her lips cracked, and a coppery taste filled her mouth. Every breath was a struggle, each step a monumental effort. She remembered the cool, clear streams of her celestial home, the gentle caress of dew on petals, the life-giving rain that nourished verdant gardens. Here, there was only death, a slow, suffocating embrace.
