The stale air of the abandoned warehouse hung heavy, thick with the scent of dust and forgotten things. Alex Thorne, his jaw tight, swept the beam of his flashlight across the grimy concrete floor. Liam O’Connell, a shadow at his side, moved with a practiced economy of motion, his eyes scanning the rafters, the shadowy corners. This place, a relic of a defunct shipping company on the city's industrial fringe, was supposed to be a dead end, a rumour whispered by a nervous informant. But Alex felt a prickle of anticipation, a familiar tension that coiled in his gut.

“Anything?” Alex’s voice was a low rasp, barely disturbing the stillness.

Liam shook his head, his gaze fixed on a stack of rotting crates near the far wall. “Just rats and rust. This guy was either full of it or spooked himself right out of here.”
