The sterile white walls of the precinct felt like a tomb, each fluorescent hum a mocking echo of the silence that had fallen over Alex’s life. He sat across from Captain Eva Rostova, her posture as impeccable as the polished silver of her rank insignia. Sunlight, a commodity he’d nearly forgotten existed in the desert dust, streamed through the blinds, slicing the room into stark contrasts of light and shadow. It illuminated the fine lines etched around her eyes, the same eyes that had once held a steely resolve, now guarded, unreadable.
“You wanted to see me, Sergeant Thorne?” Rostova’s voice was smooth, a practiced melody that could soothe or command. Today, it held an unnerving neutrality.
Alex’s knuckles, white against the chipped Formica tabletop, were his only outward sign of agitation. He’d rehearsed this moment a hundred times in the lonely hours of the night, the words a battlefield in his mind. “Captain. I… I’ve been having nightmares. About the skirmish. The ambush.”
