The scent of antiseptic and stale coffee clung to Alex like a second skin, a phantom perfume from a life he was still struggling to shed. He stood in the middle of a bustling community center, the cacophony of chatter and the distant clang of a dropped tray a stark contrast to the hushed, controlled environments he’d grown accustomed to. This wasn’t a battlefield, not in the traditional sense, but the war was still very much present, etched onto the faces of the men and women gathered here. They were veterans, like him, their bodies bearing the invisible weight of their service.

He watched a young man, barely out of his teens, fidget with the hem of his shirt, his eyes darting around the room as if expecting an ambush. Alex remembered that feeling, the constant hypervigilance, the gnawing anxiety that made even the simplest social interaction a minefield. He’d been there, drowning in the silence, convinced he was the only one adrift.

“They’re a tough crowd, aren’t they?”
