The sterile white of the hospital room felt like a cruel mockery of the muddy, blood-soaked earth Alex had known for so long. It was quiet, a suffocating blanket after the cacophony of war. The chirping of a bird outside the window, a sound he’d once found comforting, now grated on his nerves like a grinding stone. He traced the jagged line of a scar that ran from his temple to his jaw, a permanent reminder of the explosion that had nearly claimed him. But the physical wounds, the ones the doctors meticulously stitched and bandaged, were nothing compared to the unseen enemy that still clawed at his insides.

He’d seen it all, done things he couldn’t unsee, and carried the weight of it like a shroud. The conspiracy Liam had helped him expose, the betrayal that had cost so many lives, had finally been brought into the light. Captain Rostova, the architect of so much pain, was behind bars, her calculating eyes now reflecting a different kind of defeat. But victory felt hollow. The faces of the men he’d lost, the screams he still heard in the dead of night, they hadn’t vanished with Rostova’s downfall.

Sarah sat by his bedside, her presence a gentle anchor in the churning sea of his mind. Her hand, small and warm, rested on his. It was a comfort, a tether to the world he was slowly, tentatively, rejoining. “Are you… are you okay, Alex?” she whispered, her voice thick with unshed tears.
