The air in the abandoned observatory was thick with the scent of decay and ozone, a fitting perfume for the culmination of Alex’s long and torturous journey. Moonlight, fractured by the grime-streaked dome overhead, painted shifting patterns on the cracked concrete floor. Each shard of light felt like an accusation, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the stillness, each one a ghost of a moment he’d tried to outrun. He’d walked through fire, through the suffocating fog of war, and now, he stood at the precipice of his final reckoning.
Captain Eva Rostova stood silhouetted against the gaping maw of the dome’s opening, her posture unnervingly serene. The wind whipped strands of her dark hair around her face, but she remained unmoved, a statue carved from ice and ambition. Her eyes, even from this distance, seemed to pierce the gloom, locking onto Alex with an intensity that sent a shiver down his spine, a shiver that had nothing to do with the chill in the air.
“You made it, Thorne,” she said, her voice carrying a low, resonant timbre that echoed in the vast space. It was a voice that had once commanded respect, now it dripped with a chilling authority that Alex had only begun to understand. “I confess, I didn’t expect you to get this far. Most men would have broken long before reaching this point.”
