The Gauntlet

Alex and Liam are forced into a desperate fight for survival as the conspiracy's enforcers close in. Their loyalty and skills are pushed to the limit.

The air in the abandoned warehouse was thick with the cloying scent of decay and something else, something metallic and sharp that Alex recognized with a jolt of dread. Dust motes danced in the slivers of moonlight that pierced the grimy windows, illuminating a scene of grim anticipation. Liam, his face a mask of grim determination, kept his back pressed against a stack of rotting crates, his eyes darting across the cavernous space. Alex mirrored him, his hand instinctively finding the worn grip of the pistol tucked into his waistband. Every shadow seemed to writhe, every creak of the old building a harbinger of the storm about to break.

"They know we're here," Liam whispered, his voice tight. "This was too easy."

Alex grunted, his gaze sweeping over the skeletal remains of machinery and the debris-strewn floor. "Easy doesn't get us the intel. We knew there'd be a price." He remembered the hushed urgency in Liam’s voice on the phone, the carefully coded phrases that had finally broken through Alex’s self-imposed isolation. Liam had found something, something that pointed a damning finger at the very heart of the command structure Alex had once served. Something that explained the chaos, the unanswered questions, the gnawing guilt that had been his constant companion since coming home.
