The sterile air of the command center clung to Alex like a shroud, a stark contrast to the dust and grit of the desert he’d left behind. He’d walked into this place, a supposed sanctuary of order and strategy, with a singular purpose. His gaze, sharp and unyielding, locked onto Captain Eva Rostova as she reviewed a holographic display, her profile a study in cool, efficient detachment. The woman who had once been his commanding officer, a figure of authority he’d respected, now felt like the linchpin of everything that had gone so terribly wrong.

“Captain,” Alex’s voice, a low rumble, cut through the hushed hum of the room. He didn’t wait for her to acknowledge him, stepping closer, his boots echoing on the polished floor. The phantom ache in his leg, a souvenir from a mission gone awry, throbbed a familiar rhythm beneath the surface. “We need to talk.”

Rostova’s head turned, her expression unreadable, a mask honed by years of military discipline. Her eyes, a glacial blue, swept over him, taking in the tension in his shoulders, the hard set of his jaw. A flicker, too quick to be certain, crossed her face – a hint of surprise, perhaps, or something more calculating. “Sergeant Thorne. I wasn’t aware you were scheduled for an unscheduled debriefing.” Her tone was even, almost bored, but Alex heard the subtle shift, the careful framing of his presence.
