The flickering neon sign of the "Last Stand" bar cast a sickly green glow onto the rain-slicked street, painting the night in shades of desperation. Inside, the air hung thick with the smell of stale beer, cheap whiskey, and the unspoken anxieties of men who’d seen too much. Alex Thorne, his jaw tight, nursed a lukewarm drink, the ice long since melted. Across the scarred table, Liam O’Connell’s eyes, usually sharp and full of a gruff camaraderie, were clouded with a weariness that mirrored Alex’s own.

“It’s a long shot, Liam,” Alex said, his voice a low rumble that barely cut through the bar’s cacophony. He traced the condensation ring on the table with a calloused finger, the same finger that had once held a rifle steady under fire. “They’ll be expecting us. Rostova’s not one for leaving loose ends.”

Liam grunted, pushing a stray lock of dark hair from his forehead. “And what’s the alternative, Alex? Sit here and wait for them to tie up *our* loose ends? We know what they did. We know who’s behind it. If we don’t move, they win. And a lot of good men died for nothing.” His voice cracked on the last sentence, a raw edge betraying the depth of his pain.
