The rusted, corrugated iron of the abandoned observation post groaned a mournful tune in the desert wind. Dust devils, like phantom dancers, swirled around the skeletal remains of what had once been a vital hub of operations. Alex Thorne stood before it, a solitary figure against the vast, indifferent canvas of the arid expanse. This place. This godforsaken patch of dirt and metal. It was the epicenter of the nightmare that had been clawing at his soul for years.

He’d driven for hours, the familiar, gut-wrenching unease a constant companion in the passenger seat. Sarah had tried to dissuade him, her voice tight with worry, but the pull was too strong, a siren song of unresolved agony. He needed to see it, to touch it, to breathe the air that had once choked him with fear and regret.

The landscape here was brutal, unforgiving. Jagged rocks jutted from the parched earth, bleached white by an unrelenting sun. The sky was an infinite, cloudless blue, a stark contrast to the perpetual twilight that had settled in Alex’s mind for so long. He remembered the grit under his boots, the acrid smell of cordite, the desperate, guttural cries. He remembered the faces of his men, twisted in terror and then, in some cases, in the finality of death. And he remembered the mission, the one that had splintered his world into a million irreconcilable pieces.
