The weight of Liam’s hushed words settled over Alex like a shroud, heavy and suffocating. “You’re sure, Liam?” he’d rasped, the gravel in his voice a testament to days spent wrestling with shadows. Liam, his face etched with a weariness that mirrored Alex’s own, had nodded, his gaze unwavering. The sterile glow of the diner’s fluorescent lights seemed to strip away any pretense, leaving only the raw, ugly truth exposed between them.

“The intel was compromised, Alex. Not just a bad call, not just bad luck. Someone fed them our position. Someone high up.” Liam pushed a crumpled napkin across the sticky tabletop, a single, stark name scrawled in shaky ink: Rostova. Captain Eva Rostova. The name hit Alex like a physical blow, stealing his breath. Rostova. His former commanding officer. The woman who’d always seemed to operate with a chilling efficiency, her eyes like chips of ice, her pronouncements final.

“Rostova?” Alex repeated, the name tasting like ash in his mouth. It didn't compute. Rostova, the meticulous planner, the one who’d always preached discipline and adherence to protocol. The idea of her orchestrating their downfall, of her being the architect of that horrific ambush, was a bitter pill to swallow. “Why?”
