The alleyway reeked of stale beer and desperation, a symphony of dripping pipes and distant sirens playing a discordant tune. Alex hugged the shadows, the grit of the brick cool against his worn jacket. The information Liam had slipped him, a crumpled note passed with a furtive glance in a crowded bar, had led him here, to this forgotten corner of the city. "They know you're looking," Liam had rasped, his eyes darting, "Be careful, Thorne." Be careful. The words were a hollow echo of a thousand warnings whispered in the dust and chaos of war. Here, in the supposed safety of home, the enemy had found him again.

A sudden scuff of leather on asphalt shattered the grimy quiet. Alex’s senses, honed by years of scanning hostile horizons, snapped to attention. Two figures detached themselves from the deeper gloom at the alley’s mouth. They were big men, their silhouettes broad and menacing, moving with a predatory grace that spoke of more than just brute strength. No uniforms, no badges, just the cold glint of something metallic in one of their hands. Alex’s gut tightened. This wasn't a street mugging. This was something else.

He didn’t hesitate. Years of ingrained instinct took over, the battlefield instincts that had kept him alive when so many others hadn't. He dropped lower, using the overflowing dumpster as cover, his breathing shallow, controlled. The men advanced, their steps measured, as if expecting him to bolt. They were wrong. Alex Thorne didn't bolt. He fought.
