The grand hall of the ancestral estate, usually a place of hushed reverence and the scent of polished wood, now crackled with an energy that was anything but serene. Sunlight, which typically streamed through the stained-glass windows in a kaleidoscope of benevolent hues, now seemed to fracture and refract, casting sharp, accusatory angles across the polished flagstones. It was here, amidst the weight of generations and the stifling perfume of expectation, that I finally faced him. Daxton.

He stood at the far end of the hall, his form silhouetted against the imposing fireplace, a predator perfectly at ease in his domain. His smile, that same devastatingly charming smile that had once promised me the stars, now felt like a predator’s bared teeth. The air around him shimmered, a subtle distortion of reality that spoke of his immortal nature, a power that had always been a source of awe, but now, a chilling dread coiled in my stomach.

“Trinity,” he purred, his voice smooth as aged wine, yet laced with an undercurrent of something sharp, something I now recognized as possessiveness. “You’ve been away. I trust your… convalescence was restful?”
