The scent of damp earth and crushed pine needles clung to the air, a comforting perfume that always settled my racing heart. It was the smell of the forbidden woods, the place my tutors always warned me away from, the place where the rules of the gilded cage thinned and frayed. Here, amongst the ancient trees, a different kind of truth resided, one that whispered on the wind and settled in the dappled sunlight. It was here, in this wild embrace, that I had found Kael.
He lay beneath the sprawling branches of an oak, his form a stark contrast to the verdant life surrounding him.
