Daxton reappeared, his charm now a chilling echo of the past. He sought to reclaim Trinity, his possessiveness a constant threat, oblivious to the nascent feelings stirring within her.

The air in the chamber grew heavy, thick with a tension that was both familiar and terrifying. It had been weeks since I’d last seen Daxton, weeks spent tending to Atrais, bathing his wounds, whispering reassurances I wasn’t sure I believed myself. Atrais slept now, his breathing soft and even, a stark contrast to the tempest that had erupted within me since his arrival. My fingers, still stained with the herbs I’d used to cleanse his cuts, trembled as I smoothed the blanket over him. He was the reason I’d defied everyone, the reason I’d hidden him away in this forgotten wing of the estate, the reason my heart, once so carefully curated, now beat a frantic, irregular rhythm.

And now, he was here.

I turned slowly, my eyes scanning the opulent room. The shadows clung to the corners, deepening the already rich velvet drapes, but they offered no sanctuary. He stood by the hearth, the flames casting dancing light across his impossibly perfect features. Daxton. He looked exactly as I remembered, yet entirely different. The charm that had once seemed like sunshine now felt like a frost, a chilling echo of a promise that had soured. His smile, when it finally bloomed, didn’t reach his eyes. They were the same piercing blue, but they held a possessiveness that made my skin crawl.
