Servants bustled, preparing for the festivities, their hushed conversations a constant reminder of the momentous occasion. My mother, her face etched with a smile that never quite reached her eyes, would often speak of the glory that awaited our family, of the power that would flow through our veins once I was bound to Daxton. And I, dutiful daughter, would nod, my voice a practiced echo of gratitude.
