The air in the sterile European hospital room was thick with the scent of antiseptic and unspoken words. Outside, the city hummed with a life I was now inextricably, terrifyingly a part of. Inside, it was just Aryan and me, the silence stretching between us like a taut wire. My kidnapping had been a brutal, swift descent into a nightmare, a stark illustration of the world he inhabited, a world I had desperately tried to keep at bay. But he had found me, ripped me from the clutches of men who saw me as nothing more than a pawn, and brought me here, to this temporary sanctuary.
He sat on the edge of the chair, his broad shoulders hunched, his gaze fixed on my bandaged hand. It was a small injury, a graze really, but it felt like a gaping wound, a constant reminder of how close I had come to… what? To disappearing forever? To becoming another ghost in his dangerous game?
"They won't touch you again," he said, his voice a low rumble, devoid of its usual sharp edges, laced instead with a weariness that went bone-deep. "I made sure of that."
