Her presence was a balm, a steadying force that usually anchored him, but today, even her luminescence felt distant, muted by the clamor of his own internal storm.
“The northern watch reports a significant increase in… unusual activity,” Lord Valerius, his most trusted advisor, stated, his voice gravelly with age and concern. He gestured to a map spread between them, his finger tracing a jagged line along the kingdom’s northern frontier. “The scouts speak of shadows that move with unnatural speed, of a chill that seeps into the marrow, even in the midday sun.”
