The biting wind carried with it the scent of frost and something far fouler, a creeping miasma that clung to the very stones of the outer walls. Nicholas stood on the parapet, the rough granite cool beneath his gloved hands, and surveyed the desolate expanse of the borderlands. The usual crisp, clean air of Aethelgard, even in the deepening autumn, was now tainted, heavy with the unspoken threat that had begun to stir in the shadowed valleys beyond. He could feel it, a low thrum beneath his skin, a disquiet that resonated with the volatile power coiled within him.

Below, his knights milled about, their armor glinting dully in the overcast sky. Their faces, usually etched with the quiet confidence of seasoned warriors, held a new tension, a wary alertness that mirrored his own. They were the first line, the shield that bore the brunt of any encroaching darkness, and tonight, the darkness was pressing.

Elena stood beside him, a silent sentinel whose presence was a balm to his frayed nerves. The soft luminescence of her silver light, a gentle aura that always seemed to push back the shadows, pulsed faintly around her. She didn't speak, but her hand found his, her fingers intertwining with his own. Her warmth seeped into him, a steady current against the erratic surges of his own power.
