The usual haze clung to the city, a perpetual twilight born not of dawn or dusk, but of distant fires and the ceaseless churn of industry. Kael found himself drawn, as he often did, to the periphery, where the grand pronouncements of the city's saviors, the 'experts,' seemed to dissipate like heat shimmer. Today, his chosen perch was a narrow alleyway, its walls slick with a dampness that had little to do with rain. The stones beneath his worn boots were uneven, a stark contrast to the smooth, cool surface of his usual sanctuary. Kael caught the tail end of a hushed exchange between two men huddled near a overflowing bin.
