The smooth, cool surface of his stone had always been a refuge, a silent sentinel against the roiling chaos that clung to the city like a shroud. Kael had spent countless hours there, a solitary island in a sea of muffled anxieties and the ever-present, acrid tang of smoke. But today, something had shifted. The familiar weight of his own inertia felt heavier, suffocating. The pronouncements of Master Valerius, echoing from the public squares and crackling through the temperamental ether-radios, seemed to bounce off his skin, leaving no imprint. He’d heard them all: assurances of recovery, pronouncements of order, the sterile reassurances of experts who spoke of a future Kael couldn’t quite envision.

He stood, stretching limbs stiff from stillness. The stone remained, a solid anchor in the shifting reality, but Kael felt an unfamiliar pull, a nascent current urging him away. He didn’t know where he was going, only that he had to move. He had to breathe air that wasn't thick with the ghosts of what had been, or the anxieties of what was to come. He needed to see beyond the familiar, beyond the comforting grey haze that had become the backdrop to his existence.

His usual route home skirted the edges of the merchant district, a place of hushed commerce and wary eyes. Today, however, Kael turned inward, towards the warren of alleys and forgotten corners he’d always instinctively avoided. The smoke seemed to coalesce here, swirling in denser eddies, carrying with it a more potent, metallic scent that pricked at the back of his throat. The distant thrum of artillery, usually a dull, persistent murmur, now seemed to punctuate the silence with sharper, more insistent jabs. Each explosion sent a tremor through the cobblestones beneath his worn boots, a visceral reminder of the unseen conflict raging just beyond the city’s smudged horizon.
