The smooth, grey stone had become Kael’s anchor in a city that seemed determined to unravel. It sat cool and solid beneath him, a silent testament to permanence in a world that felt perpetually on the brink of dissolving into ash and acrid air. The woman reached into her pouch, her fingers nimble, and produced a few chipped coins. But as she gathered the meager fruit, one apple tumbled from her grasp, rolling a short distance across the dusty ground.
