The air tasted of ash, as it always did, a gritty film that settled on Kael’s tongue and in the back of his throat. He sat, as he often did, on the great, sun-warmed stone at the edge of the market square. Around him, the city pulsed with a muted, weary rhythm. Silas, a man who seemed to carry the weight of centuries in his stooped shoulders and the deep, knowing lines etched around his eyes, had spoken of networks, of quiet resistance, of truths buried beneath layers of manufactured calm. He’d spoken of Kael’s own capacity, not just to observe, but to *see*.
