The air hung thick and acrid, a perpetual twilight cast by the ceaseless war beyond the city's crumbling walls. Kael sat on his familiar stone, its smooth surface a cool anchor against the gnawing unease that had become his constant companion. The pronouncements of Master Valerius, once a balm, now echoed hollowly in his mind, a tinny counterpoint to the ragged breaths of the city. ‘Order is being restored,’ Valerius had declared, his voice amplified by the public squares, yet Kael saw only the frayed edges of society, the hushed anxieties, the weary resignation etched on every face.

He’d seen it again this morning, the small, almost imperceptible act that had lodged itself in his mind. A woman, her face a roadmap of hard-won days, had dropped a basket of bruised fruit. The meager bounty had scattered across the grimy cobblestones, a small tragedy in a city accustomed to larger ones. Before Kael could even process the scene, before the usual surge of indifference could wash over him, a young boy, no older than seven, had scrambled from a nearby doorway. He hadn’t hesitated, hadn’t looked around for approval or fear of scolding. He’d simply gathered the fallen fruit, his small hands surprisingly gentle, and returned them to the woman’s basket, his eyes wide and earnest. The woman had offered him a single, perfect apple, a gesture that spoke volumes more than any of Valerius’s speeches. Kael had watched, a strange stirring in his chest, a feeling he couldn’t quite name. It was a flicker, a tiny spark against the pervasive gloom.

That spark had ignited something within him, a restless curiosity that refused to be soothed by the familiar rhythm of his days. The pronouncements felt like lies, the pronouncements felt like chains. He found himself replaying the boy’s selfless act, the woman’s quiet gratitude. These were the real truths, the human truths, buried beneath the ash and rhetoric.
